A Study on the Nature of Quran in Islamic Philosophy

KIM Johann

There were various debates for property-substance caused by the reality of eternal attributesin the Islamic philosophy in 8th Century. One of the most important topics was the nature ofQuran as the Word of God. It raised the problems whether the Quran as the Word of God wascreated or exists before it's revelation or even before the creation of world. In this article I willsurvey the historical situations how the discipline of created Quran according to the Prophettradition was changed into the uncreated Quran after the conquer of Syria. Then I will analysis theanswers of Muslim scholars for two questions which were raised in terms of the development ofnew discipline. The first question is what is the relation between the uncreated word of God in thesense of the uncreated preexisted Quran and the preserved tablet(hidden book or mother ofbook). Second question is what is the relation between the uncreated word of God in the senseof preexisted Quran and the revealed Quran. Last I will examine how the discipline of enbookmentwas formed by the answers of two questions.
