고르기아스의 진리 개념 - ≪헬레네 찬가≫를 중심으로 -
이 논문은 기원전 5세기 수사가이자 소피스트인 고르기아스의 주요 연설들 가운데 ≪헬레네 찬가≫의 논변을 살펴, 그가 고려하고 있는 ‘진리’의 의미를 분석하고, 논증을 구성하는 데 있어서 그것이 설득의 확보를 위해 무슨 역할을 하는지 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 전통적으로 고르기아스는 말의 설득력을 도모하기 위해 통념에 기대어 논리적 형식성을 강조하는 것으로 이해되어 왔다. 고르기아스가 설득을 도모하기 위해 ‘조화롭게 구성된 말은 반드시 진리를 수반하여’, ‘질서를 갖추고 있어야 한다’고 하면서 논증의 형식이 가진 힘을 강조한다는 점에는 의심의 여지가 없다. 그는, 예를 들어 ≪헬레네 찬가≫에서, ‘사건의 탓을 야기한 자’가 실로 그 사건의 책임자라면, 탓이 부과되는 것에는 문제가 없다는 점을 인정하기 때문이다. 그러나 말에 있어서 진리가 가진 역할의 중요성을 강조하는 고르기아스가 단순히 통념에만 기대고 있다고 보기는 어렵다. 그는 본성상 더욱 강한 것과 더욱 약한 것 사이에서 지배력 우위를 논할 뿐 아니라, 헬레네의 가계도 및 그녀의 외적 아름다움을 강조하기 때문이다. 이러한 것들은 논리적 형식으로 정당화되는 것들이 아니라, 그것들의 본성에 기초하여 실재성의 측면에서 당위로 인정되는 것들이다. 그러므로 고르기아스는 진리를 강조하는 데 있어 ‘(말의 전개의) 논리 형식적인 타당성’을, 그리고 이와 더불어 ‘(사물이나 사태의) 본성에 기초한 실재적 정당성’을 함께 강조하고 있다고 할 수 있다.
Title The Concept of Truth in Gorgias ― A Case of Encomium of Helen ―
This paper aims to shed light upon an understanding of the concept of truth in Gorgias, a 5th century BC sophist or rhetorician. Traditionally it has been suggested that Gorgias weighs on a type of logical validity on the grounds of endoxa in order to achieve persuasion in his speeches. It is doubtless that Gorgias, for instance in Encomium of Helen, emphasising the role of truth in a speech, indeed admits that an active agent must be blamed if the agent really yields an blamable event, and constructs his argument on the basis of such a common endoxa. However, for the success of persuasion by truth, Gorgias do not only rely on an endoxa for the logical validity, but also on appeal to the nature of things or events. Gorgias in the speech articulates that a naturally stronger thing must rule and a naturally weaker thing must be ruled, and also emphasises that the lineage of Helen and her physical beauty by nature surpass those of ordinary people. These points in his argumentation are the validating factors to rescue Helen from the traditional blame and to praise her as well; yet, they are not what can be proven by logical validity but justified only by their nature. In this respect, concerning the concept of truth for the success of persuasion does Gorgias utilise not only logical validity but also justification by correspondence to the nature of things.
