One must understand the logic of Xun Zi from the standpoint of epistemology. With regards to perceiving various phenomena round us, Xun Zi described that one must use the correct name to see the truth the name represents in his text titled the ‘Correct Naming(正名).’ In China, the name was accepted as the way to perceive the existence of truth. This is known as the ‘Theory of Name and Truth(名實論).’ Xun Zi’s ‘logic’ is not a method that is used to determining whether or not a statement is true or false. Xun Zi explains mankind’s perception of truth. In other words, Xun Zi’s logic explains the human heart and here, the name is a method that can help the heart perceive truth. Such description can be found in ‘Correct Naming’ by “Xun Zi.” ‘Correct Naming’ offers the three principles of ‘Naming(制名)’ as a basis of criticizing philosophers and scholars within in the logical framework of Correct Naming. Xun Zi’s thoughts on ‘Naming(制名)’ explains the fusion of reality and ideology under the rule of a confucian monarch known as a ‘Holy King(聖王)’ from the viewpoint of his Theory of Name and Truth. Naming truth is made possible thanks to the heart which can analyze, aggregate, reflect, and infer truth based on things shared by others that the sensory organs can perceive. The ‘Theory of Name and Truth“ by Xun Zi, who integrated the school of thought known as the ‘Hundred Schools of Thought(諸子),’ is connected to the characteristics of his overall philosophy, and this thesis establishes the fact that the Theory is described in detail in ‘Correct Naming’ which represents Xun Zi’s logic.
