Some Paths toward Real-Self ― On Spectrum of Self Concepts

LEE, Ki-Heung

People want to live happily, but reality is often not so. To live a peaceful and happy life free from pain and suffering, people analyze each cause of their own misfortunes. Humans generally look for reasons or causes of misfortune outside of themselves, in external factors. Even if it is successful, it means just a degree of first aid, but it is far from solving a fundamental problem. The solution to the fundamental problem lies not in the outside but in the inside, that is, in the change of 'I' to a new one as this paper argues. To discuss the change of the 'I', I first distinguish between two different selves: the surface-I and the depth-I, the authentic self, the inauthentic self, the ego and the self. According to orthodoxy of mind practice, people mistakenly hold the former (ego) among the two for their real subject, and they suffer as a result of such selection. Suffering usually results from the confusion of the ego for the true/authentic self. To live a happier life it is necessary to change my attitude and the axe of my being. That is to say that to change myself to get out of suffering and move on to the path of happiness, means moving from an ego-based life to a self-based life. This process consists of seven steps that I identify in this article. This path might be thought of as a possible way to the real/authentic self and living. Unlike the self concept which is understood from the metaphysical or ontological perspective, the real self here is mainly understood, in relation to the self that knows and has the ability to move away from suffering to peace and happiness, or in relation to such an methodologically ideal 'I'.
