Investigation on the grounds of morality in The Four Books (『四書』) and Kant’s philosophy

Park, Jong-Sik

In this paper I investigate the grounds of morality between “The Four Books”(『四書』) and Kant’s Philosophy, namely, the problem how to realize the principle of original morality in mind or in the noumenal world into the phenomenal world. From a moral point of view, The Four Books and Kant's moral philosophy have no direct correlation. However, the problem how to realize the principle of original morality in mind or in the noumenal world into the phenomenal world in specific situations is a concern of all of moral philosophers. The paradigm of immanence and apriority in The Four Books and Kant's transcendental philosophy deals with the moral law. In this respect, I will prove that there are internal relationships of their moral laws, their grounds of the laws, their apriority and immanence in moral laws. I investigate the way of realization of original mind(本心) and human nature(性) in The Four Books and that of moral laws of the practical reason in Kant’s philosophy from a morality of view. In particular, I compare the process for the original mind, for Four Virtues to be presented outside in The Four Books with the process for moral laws in the noumenal world to be presented to the phenomenal world in Kant’s philosophy. I show that human nature(性) in The Four Books and moral law in Kant’s philosophy have the same ways to realize the moral laws into the real world or into the phenomenal world. The theory that our epistemological objects don’t exist by themselves, but they are constituted by us is called Copernican Revolution. We can recognize the phenomenal things, but we can’t recognize the things themselves. In this point, Kant says that we can’t go beyond the limits of our cognition, but we can assume the noumenal world(Ding an sich) as an axiom. Human beings have the duality of the phenomenal world and the noumenal world in which they live. This duality is the condition or foundation of freedom and the moral laws in human beings. The transition from the mean which isn’t presented out(未發之中) to the mean which is presented out as just right in moderation(發而皆中節) is similar to that from causality of nature to causality of freedom in Kant's moral law.
