비극에 대한 두 해석 - 쇼펜하우어와 니체의 경우
본 논문의 목적은 쇼펜하우어와 니체의 비극에 대한 해석을 비교하는 것이다. 예술의 한 양식으로서 비극은 삶의 근본 조건에서 비롯된 끔찍함과 불안을 예술의 자양분으로 삼는다. 쇼펜하우어에서 비극은 여타의 예술과 마찬가지로 맹목적 의지에서 비롯된 고통을 잠시 저지시키는 ‘진정제’의 역할을 한다. 그에게 비극에 대한 평가 기준은 세계의 진상인 고통의 일반성과 깊이를 얼마나 객관화하고 효과적으로 재현하는가에 달려있다. 여기에 가장 합당한 비극은 인간관계에서 비롯된 고통의 일상화를 형상화한 근대의 비극이다. 비극은 고통을 대하는 최고의 지혜가 삶에 대한 체념임을 가르친다. 쇼펜하우어의 비극이해와 달리 니체에서 비극은 삶에 대한 체념의 지혜를 전달하는 예술이 아니다. 오히려 그에게 비극의 효과는 염세주의의 극복에 있다. 또한 그에게 비극은 쇼펜하우어가 분류하듯이 시문학의 일종이 아니라 음악, 정확히 말해 합창이 바탕이 되는 그리스 비극을 지칭한다. 비극의 효과적 측면에서도 니체는 쇼펜하우어와 달리 비극을 의지의 진정제가 아니라 삶의 자극제로 파악함으로써 쇼펜하우어의 의지의 형이상학을 비판하는 근거로 삼는다.
Two concepts of the tragedy - The case of Schopenhauer and Nietzsche
This article aims to discuss the concept of the tragedy of Schopenhauer and Nietzsche. The tragedy as a form of art is deeply rooted in life, in which fear and terror arise from living conditions. For Schopenhauer, tragedy plays the role quietly and, like other arts, calmly, at least temporarily, relieving suffering that results from blind will. For him, the evaluation of tragedies depends on how they can objectively and effectively represent the ordinariness and depth of suffering. A pattern for this is the tragedy of the modern age, in which misfortune is brought about by the mere position of the persons against each other and the conditions. For Schopenhauer, tragedy means that the best wisdom against suffering of life is contemplation. Nietzsche dissociates himself from Schopenhauer's conception of tragedy. For Nietzsche, tragedy is not an art that teaches contemplation of suffering from life. On the contrary, tragedy shows a way to overcome pessimism. Schopenhauer's talk of the 'Quietiv des Willens' sets Nietzsche's thesis of art as the 'great stimulant to life'.
