The Possibility of Grand-narrative after Deconstruction and Agamben - Focusing on Agamben’s bare life and coming community

KIM, Chong-Ki

This study focuses on "bare life" and "coming community" as the core of Agamben’s thought, and how Agamben provides a perspective to recapture history and the world through universality, commonality, or universal principle in the age of post-postmodernism. Its strategy is not to assess and defend Agamben through a direct review of the criticisms of Agamben (such as the lack of adaptability to reality and practical strategies, pessimism, etc.) but rather to reconstruct Agamben’s thought focusing on his principal work Homo Sacer, in order to positively accept his ideas from the advocate’s perspective. In this work I regard Agamben’s arguments as a basis for rethinking universality and commonality beyond differences and diversity in the age of post-postmodernism, and as coming to the front as a grand-narrative. His grand-narrative is based on the view that history has been penetrated by the universal principle of exclusion and inclusion of ‘bare life’ and ‘Homo Sacer’ since ancient times. Through this grand-narrative, Agamben accepts Foucault’s bio-politics and goes beyond Foucault, who has stopped at analyzing the bio-power and goes on to explain the sovereign power. From this point of view, history is a process in which ‘bare life’ is constantly excluded and included by sovereign power. He speaks of the aporia of modern democracy and is able to express “the inner solidarity between democracy and totalitarianism” from which he suggests that ‘the coming community’ is not a ‘future’ community, but rather a community based on the commonality and universality of individuals that are constructed on the basis of the 'whatever singularity' of ‘whatever beings’. This community is one that is now being embodied or is to be embodied here by individuals who are free from the manifestation of any identity, the solidarity of the global petty bourgeoisie. Here Agamben refers to a community without exclusion and inclusion, a community without violence and discrimination, and a community without abandonment. For this reason, he refers to a community based on the figure of refugees, not a community based on the concept of human rights and sovereignty.
