Resistance in a fatigue society

JOO, Kwang-Sun

We live in a fatigue society. Byung-Chul Han insists that the immunological society of binary opposition has turned into the fatigue society; society which has neuronal disorder. This has six aspects. It is a society where 1)diversity has disappeared and 2)a society of excess and 3)a society of positivity. This society appears to be 4)a society of freedom, but, in reality, 5)a society which demands overachievement. Because it’s a society dominated by 6)the power and freedom is just a self-made illusion. In this society everybody without exception experiences self-exploitation and burnout, but feels neither indignant nor resistant. This is on account of 3)the positivity and 4)the illusion of freedom. Furthermore, on the one hand, the excess of positivity mass-produces an ideology ‘yes, we can’, on the other, because people have the freedom to act according to their own desire and will, they blame themselves for their failure. Also 1)disappearance of diversity and 2)excess contributes to this tendency. With the disappearance of diversity, there is no ‘other’ to attack and to blame, so that people attack themselves. And the excess of informations and tasks leads them to lose the ability to express their indignation. Foucault regards this loss of resistance as result of governmentality. To him, the power is not prohibition but the formation of the subject. This is the meaning of Foucault’s governmentality. In other words, the neoliberal governing affirms and encourages desire. That’s why people labor pursuing their own desire without hesitation. But this freedom is subordinate to the public good, that is the expansion of achievement. The strategy of governmentality subordinating is the invention of subject, namely the invention of homo economicus. The economic man competes without limitation and eventually becomes burnout. But he cannot resist, because he is economic man. The way to escape from this outcome is to become a new kind of subject. We will consider a new idea of man of mutual dependence and of emptiness as possibility to resist against to neoliberalism.
