The Language of Buddhism, the Language of Buddhist Counseling

YOUN, Hee-Jo

In early Buddhism, the emergence of language comes from the feeling(vedanā), the idea(saññā), the thought(vitakka) and the proliferation of thought(papañca) through the process of depedent origination. In Yogacara Buddhism, language need to objects (artha, viṣaya, vastu, boundary), image of objects(nimitta, phase), names that designate shapes(nāma, name), cognition(vijñāna), and discrimination(vikalpa, sorting). The language thus created amplifies and functions to express the tendency of the mind. Expression has the possibility of clarification and possibility of distortion. There is a possibility of beneficial language and harmful language due to the unbalance of fluidity and rigidness the language. Right Language and Wrong Language represent the beneficial language and the harmful language, and quarreling language and non-quarreling language represent the functions of the two languages in social relations. Benefit and harm are possible when you have a purpose in mind. The language in Buddhist counseling pursues a goal-oriented language that uses language centered on the goal of eliminating the suffering of the clients. Unlike the language of being tied to the rigidness of language, the language of becoming which seeks to show the fluidity of reality is an attempt to go beyond the limits of language. It is a premise of Buddhist language philosophy that it wants to advance to the language which refers to moon through the language of becoming. It refers to a language that does not express the reality itself, but functions to point to reality. Buddhist counseling refers to using a language that is oriented toward reality. Language is not a reality in itself, but it is a language oriented toward reality. Because of the rigidness of the characters, it is impossible to capture the fluidity of meaning. Therefore, knowing the limit of speech is an advantage that Buddhist counseling language can have. The language of Buddhist counseling should be utilized differently according to the client's ability, and language and silence are not the opposite, but a different methodology for one goal.
