It would not be too much to say that the lives of most modern people lie in an extension of digital media based on the internet. Digital media makes up a very large portion of people’s daily lives, and so media culture expands and permeates in people’s social lives where media is not used merely for communication. It is thus socially expected to attempt reinterpretation of media attributes. In other words, academic efforts in the area of cultural research are asked for an active response to and an object understanding of expandability of digital media rather than provide a conventional effort and interpretation. In terms of perceiving attributes of media, the conventional ways of cultural study have limitations on comprehensively objectifying a newly transformative process of the digital cultural society based on advanced internet technology which we face today, because the conventional has been grounded on instrumental interpretations with functionalism. Hence, with Chuang-tzu’s Heaven’s Net Becoming theory, this critical study on determinacy of media culture tries to focus on expandability at a surprisingly fast pace which traditional cultural study has neglected so far. The study is conducted through Manmuljedong (great harmony of all things) emphasized in Chuang-tzu’s philosophical ideas to define characteristics of digital media culture on the bedrock of internet. This study is considered to offer a comprehensible criterion of interpretations of media culture that has been expanding in our society, and at the same time to be a process to deal with problems derived from digital culture through Chuang-tzu’s philosophical ideas, that is, relational restoration of organic thought.
