The Meaning of the House in Heidegger’s Thought of the Architecture

Oh, Yong-Deuk

Heidegger says that the architecture is a mode of the disclosing. Accordance with Heidegger’s thought of technology, we may be able to divide the disclosing in relation to the architecture into two; one is the poietic disclosing as like ancient Greek word ‘poiēsis’, and the another is the provocative disclosing as like German word ‘Ansinnen’. In the poietic disclosing, the meaning of house focuses on the dwelling. In the provocative disclosing, however, the meaning of house is defined as a means of property increase. So then, how must we understand the meaning of the house? On this question, Heidegger maintains that we ought to understand the meaning of house in consideration how the house relates to the meaning of human existence. Heidegger says that the architecture as the provocative disclosing is working as an en-framing which stations each and every thing as a being-havinga- fixed-meaning. By this en-framing, for example, the house is defined as a means of property increase. In this case man is the requester who wish the house to be such a being-having-a-fixed-meaning, thereby man also comes to be a being-having-a-fixed-meaning. If so, then man is sure to be deviated from the essential realm of human existence that is characterized by “the openness of existence”- expressed in German word ‘Dasein’. If we would live in the essential realm of human existence, we should listen to a message that the words ‘to build’ and ‘to dwell’ tell us. According to Heidegger’s thought of architecture, these words tell us; to say that we build a house and dwell in it is same as to say that we exist as a man.
