Metaphor and Symbol of I ching

Ku, Mi-Suk

This thesis is an attempt to understand the oracles of I Ching as a metaphor and symbol of poetry. Understanding the main images of hexagram and six-lines as metaphors and symbols, it is intended to reveal the world view of the corresponding universe contained in such expressions. Unlike in general poetry, there can be two types of the primary ideas(A) of hexagram and six-lines in I Ching. One can be a specific hexagram and lines belonging to it, and the other can be found in the question when divination is made. In any case, oracles become secondary ideas(B). A hexagram can be viewed as a metaphor for juxtaposition of seven stanzas. And it is hexagram’ name that integrates the hexagram and six-lines written on the basis of very connotative and discontinuous thought into one theme. In other words, the hexagram’ name corresponds to the title of the poem. When reading I Ching as a metaphor, the striking difference from ordinary poetry is that the primary idea is very vague and fluid. The reason is that there are two trigrams in one hexagram, and each trigram contains many images of things. A symbol is a form in which the primary idea is hidden and only the secondary idea is shown in a simile or metaphor. In terms of the fact that the primary idea of a symbol is hidden and its meaning is only vaguely implied, the form of I Ching is a metaphor, but the meaning of the main image is a symbol. The hexagram and six-lines of I Ching expressed in metaphors or symbols, compares unknown secrets of nature to well-known concrete images of things. However, the language of I Ching is interpreted differently by different readers because of its ambiguous symbolism. The metaphorical world connects distant objects as if they were separate, and the unknown symbol makes this world mysterious. I Ching shows the corresponding worlds of the microcosm and the grand universe, which were the universal world views of the East and the West before modern natural science. Therefore, the images of eight trigram that the main language for understanding I Ching should be understood as a symbol.
