Plato’s Gorgias and Battle or Festival : Three Understandings of Socratic Dialectic

Koo, Kyo-Sun

There have been merely a few surveys of Plato’s Gorgias as a whole and there is no clear unifying theme of this dialogue. In this situation, this paper proposes that it is one of the consistent interests of this work to suggest three ways of understanding the essence of Socratic dialectic and then to advocate one of them. More specifically, this essay contends that the dialogue shows both that one may regard Socratic dialectic as a kind of zero-sum game and that one may consider it as a kind of healing process. Yet, this essay maintains, an ideal Socratic dialectic is a process in which all participants of it become more virtuous.
