By embedding technology in symbolic forms, Cassirer characterizes it as a “forma formans.” In doing so, Cassirer emphasizes that technology is both a human creation and a thing. This dual nature of technology comes from its “form”. The “form” of technology is set up as a natural truth of existence, which is the truth of natural materials in terms of production, but also shapes the world in terms of use. Both in terms of production and in terms of use, technology shapes the world as it exists. If the basis for processing natural materials is form, then this form in turn acts on the world to form a certain form of life. Therefore, technological formalization has a double meaning. One is the meaning of making, and the other is the meaning of function. The function of a technical object is to shape the world through form. In this case, the form does not correspond to the intention of the creator, but is clarified through the mutual subjective interpretation of the user. More specifically, the form is finalized through the inter-subjective interpretive process of the user. At this point, Cassirer’s philosophy of technology connects with the social construction of technology. However, by characterizing technology as a symbolic form, Cassirer does not see the development of technology as a haphazard process of selection based on coincidental social interests. Rather, the development of technology follows the development of symbolic forms in general, as a process in which mental energy embodies itself in sensory forms, which in turn shape the world.
