철학에 대한 일반인들의 인식도 조사연구를 통한 ‘철학의 위기’에 대한 실증적 분석
본 연구는 철학에 대한 일반인들의 인식도 조사를 바탕으로 철학 혹은 인문학의 위기를 실증적으로 분석하려는 목적을 지닌다. 이러한 목적을 달성하기 위해 우선 전국의 20세에 서 64세 성인 남녀 총 1,019명을 대상으로 95±3.1%의 신뢰도 및 표본오차 수준으로 2019년 5월에 설문조사를 실시했다. 이 연구는 다음과 같은 두 가지 가설을 설정하고 이 가설을 검증하기 위해 설문조사 결과를 활용했다. 첫 번째 가설은 “만약 설문응답자 중 다 수가 ‘철학은 필요한 학문이고 중요하다’라고 생각함에도 불구하고 ‘철학이 위기다’라고 한 다면 철학의 위기는 실체가 없는 것이거나, 그 위기는 오직 대학 안에 있는 철학과의 위기 일 것이다.”이고, 두 번째 가설은 “만약 설문응답자 중 다수가 ‘철학은 불필요한 학문이고 중요하지 않다’라고 생각한다면 ‘철학이 위기다’는 말은 현실을 제대로 반영한 표현일 것 이다.”이다. 그리고 이 가설을 검증하기 위해 설문조사 결과를 바탕으로 철학의 중요도에 대한 인식도, 대학교육에서 철학의 중요성에 대한 인식도, 자녀의 철학 전공선택에 대한 의견을 분석하였다. 결과적으로 두 번째 가설은 설문조사 결과와 달랐고, 첫 번째 가설이 설문조사 결과와 일치하는 것으로 드러났다. 이러한 실증적 분석 이후 한국사회에서 회자 되는 철학의 위기를 고찰해 보았다. 한국의 대학에서 철학과가 통폐합되고 수가 줄고 있다 는 점에서 한국사회에서 철학은 위기라고 볼 수 있을 것이다. 하지만 대다수의 사람들이 철학과 대학에서의 철학교육의 중요성에 공감하고 있음이 설문조사를 통해 드러났다. 따 라서 결론적으로 한국사회에서 철학이 반드시 위기에 처한 것은 아니며, 오히려 철학에 대 한 철학자들의 태도를 철학계가 스스로 성찰할 필요성이 있음을 이 연구는 보여주고 있다.
An Eempirical Analysis of the ‘crisis of philosophy’ through Research on Public Perception of Philosophy
The purpose of this study is to empirically analyze the crisis of philosophy or the humanities based on a survey of the general public's perception of philosophy. To achieve the purpose of this study, a survey was conducted in May 2019 with a confidence level of 95±3.1% and a sampling error level of a total of 1,019 men and women aged 20 to 64 across the country. In this study, the following two hypotheses were established and the survey results were used to test these hypotheses. The first hypothesis is, “If most of the survey respondents answered that ‘philosophy is a crisis’ despite thinking that ‘philosophy is a necessary and important discipline’, then the crisis of philosophy has no substance, or the crisis is only at university. It will be a crisis with the philosophy within.” The second hypothesis is “If a majority of those who responded to the survey thought that ‘philosophy is an unnecessary discipline and not important’, then the statement ‘philosophy is in crisis’ would be a true reflection of reality.” And to prove this hypothesis, based on the results of the survey, an analysis was performed on the perception of the importance of philosophy, the perception of the importance of philosophy in university education, and the opinion of children's choice of philosophy major. As a result, the second hypothesis showed different results from the survey results, and the first hypothesis was found to be consistent with the survey results. In this paper, after such an empirical analysis, the crisis of philosophy discussed in Korean society is considered. Considering that the Department of Philosophy has been consolidated or the number of departments operating in Korean universities is decreasing, it can be seen that philosophy is clearly a crisis in Korean society. However, the survey revealed that the majority of people agree on the importance of philosophy and philosophy education in universities. Therefore, in conclusion, philosophy is not necessarily in crisis in Korean society, and this study is rather to show that the philosophy community needs to reflect on the attitudes of philosophers toward philosophy.
