매체와 감각의 재편 – 벤야민을 중심으로
매체이론가 매클루언에 따르면 매체는 ‘인간의 확장’이다. 매클루언의 이 주장은 매체 가 가진 힘을 간결하게 표현할 뿐만 아니라 모든 매체 철학의 전제가 된다. 발터 벤야민은 매클루언에 앞서 매체와 감각의 재편에 대해 언급한다. 물론 그의 관심은 매체 자체에 있 기보다는 기술적 복제의 도입으로 예술과 예술작품의 정의와 역할의 변화를 추적하는 것 이다. 본 논문은 기술적 복제시대의 예술작품 (Das Kunstwerk im Zeitalter seiner technischen Reproduzierbarkeit)(1939)을 중심으로 벤야민의 주장을 매체철학의 관점 에서 상론한다. 먼저 우리는 매체와 감각의 재편, 매체와 세계관의 변화를 매클루언의 매체이론을 통해 확인한다. 둘째, 우리는 벤야민의 매체에 대한 사유를, 특히 영화를 중심으로 살펴보되, 영화와 연극의 기술적 차이를 통해 드러낸다. 셋째, 벤야민의 매체와 감각의 재편 그리고 매체와 인식방법의 차이를 그림과 영화의 예시를 통해 살펴본다. 넷째, 벤야민의 매체와 사회변혁의 문제를 영화의 사회적 기능을 통해 고찰할 것이다. 마지막으로 우리는 벤야민 의 매체철학이 가진 한계를 살펴볼 것이다.
Media and Reshaping of Human Senses - Focusing on W. Benjamins’ Theory
According to media theorist McLuhan, the medium is ‘extension of man’. This argument of McLuhan not only concisely expresses the power of media, but also becomes the premise of all media philosophies. Before McLuhan, Walter Benjamin mentions the media and reshaping of human sense. Of course, his interest is not in the media itself, but in tracking changes in the definition and role of art and works of art with the introduction of technological copying. This thesis discusses Benjamin’s argument from the perspective of media philosophy, focusing on Das Kunstwerk im Zeitalter seiner technischen Reproduzierbarkeit (1939). First, we confirm through McLuhan’s theory which is the most representative theoretical model for the media and reshaping of human sense, and changes in media and worldview. Second, it examines Benjamin’s thoughts on media, especially film, but reveals the technological difference between film and theater. Third, we examine Benjamin’s arguments for the media, reshaping of human sense, and differences in recognition methods through examples of paintings and films. Fourth, Benjamin’s statement of the media and problems of social change will be considered through the social function of film. Finally, we will examine the limitations of Benjamin's media philosophy.
