르네상스 시기의 이상사회 논의의 의의와 한계
이 논문은 르네상스 시기에 출판된 이상사회에 대한 3권의 책, 즉 토머스 모어의 『유토피아』, 토마소 캄파넬라의 『태양의 나라』, 프랜시스 베이컨의 『새로운 아틀란티스』를 다 룬다. 필자는 이 책들의 논의를 바탕으로 다음의 결론을 내린다. 첫째, 르네상스 시대의 이상사회론은 직접적이건, 간접적이건 플라톤의 사상의 영향을 받고 있다. 둘째, 이 작품 들은 모두 교육의 중요성과 학문의 필요성을 다룬다. 특히 『유토피아』와 『태양의 나라』는 매우 선진적으로 모든 시민에 대한 의무교육을 강조하고, 『새로운 아틀란티스』는 솔로몬 학술원이라는 기구를 통해서 과학적 유토피아의 가능성과 필요성을 주장한다. 셋째, 『유토피아』와 『태양의 나라』는 노동에 대한 관점을 변화시켜, 노동을 긍정적으로 인식하는 시각을 제공한다. 물론 모어, 캄파넬라, 베이컨, 이 세 사람의 현실 인식은 상이하고 당시 의 종교적 배경을 그대로 수용하고 있으나, 그럼에도 불구하고 그들의 이상사회론은 여전 히 가치가 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 우리의 현실은 이상 사회를 담아내기에는 여러 가지 한계를 지니고 있으며, 철학적 사변으로 남아있다.
Meanings and Limites in Theory of Utopia during Renaissance Era
This paper discusses three books which was publish during the Renaissance era. These books are Thomas More's Utopia, Tommaso Campanella's The City of the Sun, and Francis Bacon's New Atlantis. And these books deal with ideal society. I draw the following conclusions based on the discussions of these books. First, utopian thought during the Renaissance era is influenced by the ideas of Plato, whether directly or indirectly. Second, all of these works emphasize the importance of education and the necessity of scholarship. In particular, Utopia and The City of the Sun advocate for compulsory education for all citizens in an advanced manner, whereas New Atlantis argues for the possibility and necessity of a scientific utopia through the institution of the House of Solomon. Third, Utopia and The City of the Sun provide a perspective that changes the perception of labor, offering a positive view of labor. Of course, the authors—More, Campanella, and Bacon—have different thoughts of reality and still adhere to the religious backgrounds of their own time. However, Theories of Ideal Society which they present are still valuable.
